What is Float Therapy & Who Should Use It?
Being in a float tank, also known as a sensory deprivation tank, offers a unique and deeply relaxing experience. Here's what it typically feels like:
Weightlessness: The high concentration of Epsom salts in the water allows you to effortlessly float on the surface, creating a sensation of weightlessness that relieves pressure on joints and muscles.
Sensory Deprivation: The tank is usually enclosed in a soundproof, lightproof environment, reducing external sensory input. This isolation helps to quiet the mind and promote deep relaxation.
Mindfulness and Meditation: Many people use float tanks for meditation or mindfulness practice. The absence of external stimuli encourages introspection and a heightened awareness of one's thoughts and feelings.
Physical Benefits: Floating can alleviate muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote faster recovery from physical exertion or injury.
Mental Clarity: Some users report enhanced mental clarity and creativity after floating sessions. The relaxed state of mind allows for deeper introspection and problem-solving.
Overall, the experience of being in a float tank can vary from person to person, but it often leads to a profound sense of relaxation, rejuvenation, and mental clarity.
Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation or float tank therapy, can be beneficial for a wide range of people due to its potential therapeutic effects. Here are some groups of individuals who might consider trying floatation therapy:
Those Seeking Stress Relief: Float tanks are excellent for reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Individuals with high-stress lifestyles or those experiencing chronic stress may find relief through regular float sessions.
People with Anxiety or PTSD: The sensory deprivation aspect of floatation therapy can help calm the nervous system and reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Athletes and Physical Recovery: Float tanks are used by athletes to accelerate recovery from workouts, injuries, or competition. The weightlessness and Epsom salt solution can soothe sore muscles and joints.
Meditators and Mindfulness Practitioners: Floatation therapy provides an ideal environment for deepening meditation practices and enhancing mindfulness. The sensory deprivation encourages introspection and mental clarity.
Those with Chronic Pain: The buoyancy and reduced sensory input in float tanks can provide temporary relief from chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, or back pain.
Creatives and Problem Solvers: Many artists, writers, and professionals find that floatation therapy enhances creativity and problem-solving abilities by allowing the mind to wander freely without external distractions.
Individuals Seeking Spiritual Exploration: Some people use float tanks as a tool for spiritual exploration or self-discovery due to the altered states of consciousness that can be achieved.
People with Sleep Disorders: Floating can promote relaxation and help regulate sleep patterns, making it beneficial for individuals with insomnia or other sleep-related issues.
However, it's essential to consider individual health conditions and consult with a healthcare provider before trying floatation therapy, especially if you have medical concerns or are pregnant. Overall, floatation therapy offers a unique opportunity for relaxation, recovery, and introspection, making it appealing to a diverse range of individuals seeking holistic well-being.
Your Luna Wellness Center Visit (what to expect and how to prepare)
Before: For the best float experience it's suggested that you:
have a light meal before your float
avoid caffeine
use the washroom
avoid shaving or dying hair
arrive at least 10 minutes early to your appointment for orientation
Arrival:
If you haven't already, fill our our Client intake Form and Waiver
We will ask your shoe size and give you a pair of slip resistant spa sandals
We will ask you (again) if you need to use the washroom before hand
If it's your first time, we will give you a little tour
Your Room
All guests are provided with a towel, face cloth, robe, silicone ear plugs, and ointment (for any cuts/scrapes). In your Float room is a private shower with shampoo/body wash, conditioner and lotion. We provide a Halo Neck Support, a Nekdoodle or Pool Noodle, if you'd like support while in the float tank.
You will be instructed to:
Before entering the Float tank undress in your private room (no bathing suit required!), put in ear plugs (optional) , shower your entire body and hair using the Shampoo/Body Wash ONLY (warm shower only to not raise body temperature), dry your hands/face, apply ointment as required.
Once inside the Float Tank you will have access to a underwater LED light as well we provide a "Floaty Globe" that you can bring into the tank. While R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) is normally conducted in the dark, some people like to have the light on for a bit in the beginning and you are in control of your experience.
Floating is typically done in silence but we provide Spa Music to listen to as well. Some people like to listen to guided meditations or podcasts. If you have something on your phone you want to listen to, we do have an auxiliary jack to accommodate that with different plug-in options (Type-C, Lightning Cable, etc.). At the end of your Float we turn the music On or Off and turn the light on inside the tank to awaken you.
Post Float
Once finished, shower off all salt and use the Shampoo/Body Wash, Conditioner and Lotion.
Get dressed and leave all towels, robes and anything taken into the tank in your room.
We ask all Floaters to kindly spend no more than 15 minutes showering and getting dressed to allow time to prepare the room for our next guest.
Use our Beauty Bar station (hair dryer, hair straightener, combs, Q-tips, etc.).
When you are ready to leave, you can make your way back up to our reception and book your next float therapy session!
Enjoy the post-float glow and benefits for days to come.
Don't forget to trade your spa sandals back in for your own shoes.
